FIH Pro League

To the uninitiated, the 2020–21 Men’s FIH Pro League is the second season of the FIH Pro League, the premier men’s field hockey national team league series. The tournament started in January 2020 but was halted in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is set to finish in June 2021. In this nine-team tournament, each team hosts the other twice within a couple of days in a round-robin format.

FIH Pro League 2020 Men’s standings.

Both India and Argentina are tied on 10 points with two wins apiece but India have played 4 matches less and have a positive goal difference to show for in this 2020-21 season.

Statistics

The Los Leones (The Lions) hold the edge over India in the head to head for the 7 matches in all competitions since 2013 – winning 4, drawing 1 while losing 2 and have scored more goals 16 to 11 in these matches. But with an identical standing (India: 5th and Argentina: 6th) in both the current FIH World Ranking as well as the FIH Hockey Pro League table, the competition will be fierce and it will be difficult to predict the result.

Argentinian flavour

Adapting to the host nation’s playing style will be the key for the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. Led by Pedro Ibarra and with Juan Vivaldi at the goal, the reigning Olympic champions are without the services of talisman dragflicker Gonzallo Piellat who took a break from Argentina hockey in 2019. However, they have found an able replacement to the fearsome drag-flicks he produced in that of Leandro Tolini who is second on the overall goal scoring charts of this Pro League season with 10 goals.

“Argentina’s style of play is slightly different compared to the teams we played in Europe. We will certainly be using this tour as an opportunity to gather momentum ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Teams around the world are trying to get as much match practice before the Olympics and we are no different. We are grateful to be getting more games under our belt and need to make the most of it. To play the Olympic champions will be challenging but I believe we have the experience and the talent in our ranks to come out victorious.” – Indian Men’s Hockey Team dragflicker and vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh before the start of the Argentinian tour.

Goals galore in friendlies

With 15 goals in the friendly matches, it goes to show how closely contested this match-up is both in terms of FIH rankings and current form. However, both India and Argentina need to shore up their defensive backline of defenders and goalkeepers along with stoppers need to thwart the PC attempts, given the amount of goals they have leaked.

“Having missed match practice for much of last year, we have to cash in on the opportunities we get. It is good for us that we are tested against a tough opponent like Olympic champions Argentina. In both games, we showed a lot of fight and created loads of chances. But we could have scored even more whilst conceding fewer goals. We are working hard to be more compact at the back and being more ruthless going forward.” – captain Manpreet Singh.

Indian Forms and Tactics

Given that there was negligible competitive hockey played for most of 2020 and players were confined to practice and maintain their fitness in closets, India do look sharp in their recent matches. India did have players returning from injury and those who had opted out of the earlier European friendly tour, and it has been a happy return for each of them with captain Manpreet Singh putting across a dominant midfield show, Rupinder Pal Singh adding to his tally of drag-flick goals and Varun Kumar bragging a hat-trick in the two matches. The likes Nilakanta Sharma, Dilpreet Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay and young forward Shilanand Lakra have provided immaculate assists to back the forward line and also to earn worthy penalty corners (PC).

The European adventure was indeed a fruitful one for the Indians as they were undefeated including a 6-1 mauling of Germany and a narrow 3-2 win against Great Britain while playing a 1-1 draw each with both these teams. This after it had beaten each of the top 3 teams in the world – World Cup winners Belgium, 2019 Pro League champions Australia and Netherlands (in order of their 2020 rankings) on their Pro League debut in their own backyard with all 6 matches being held at the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha last year.

“The match was very similar to our first practice game. We had opportunities to close out the match but we didn’t take them. Unfortunately, some turnovers in the second half gave them opportunities to come back. You can’t give a team like Argentina chances to get back in the game and not expect them to take it. On the weekend, we need to be more mindful of our thoroughness at both ends of the pitch ensuring we are more frugal in defense and clinical in attack.” expressed Reid.

Hear coach Graham Reid speak on India’s preparation for the FIH Hockey Pro League in Argentina and beyond.

Argentina’s counterattack

Argentina on the other hand are coming back from 2 defeats suffered at the hands of Germany last weekend. These were their first competitive matches for over a year due to the pandemic and perhaps a bit rusty to begin with.

“Apart from the result, we are happy to be back after one year. Even in the negative points, we can take something positive from those. We are just three months from the Olympic Games, so we are happy to be back. We did a lot of negative things, but in this moment, it is good because we have time to improve them.” – Argentina’s Nicolas Keenan after the consecutive loss against the German side.

They will be keen to make quick amends and close out gaps as they play India in the double header beginning tomorrow. Argentinian coach Mariano Ronconi acknowledges India’s fine form and his team’s ability to bounce back post the German debacle.

“Yes, it is a different team but a strong one, they are very good. The last games against them were really great and they have been playing international hockey. They have been on tour in Europe so they are coming with more games. Fortunately, this comes when we have had two matches against Germany and after these matches we’ll have to start solving the issues that we think we need to improve before the matches against India.” – Argentinian coach Mariano Ronconi.

Future Plans

“Of course, victorious results would be great, but I think the most important things for us is to get familiar with the way that we play. We will come up against different oppositions to test our theories but also to test the way we play and how we solve problems that other teams will bring to us. That learning – how to solve problems on the go – that is why we are looking forward to playing the Olympic champions, so we can get that extra high level of competition.” – Coach Graham Reid on India’s Olympic preparations.

Telecast

While the opening two practice matches were not telecast or available on live stream, much to the chagrin of Indian hockey fans but both the pro league matches will be televised albeit at very early hours in India. Below are the details of the TV partners and timings.

Although the fans will not be allowed into the stadium itself, there will be plenty who will tune in to watch the Indian team in action at a competitive tournament after long, despite the IPL 2021 Cricket frenzy around. Here’s hoping that the lads would put up a strong and consistent showing much to the delight of millions of hockey fans and give the perfect birthday gift to coach Reid.

Of thrills and comebacks – The Indian men’s hockey practice matches in Argentina

India and Argentina have been involved in some edge of the seat thrillers over the years and the last competitive tournament encounter where India battled to a 2-1 win in the 2018 Champions Trophy match in Breda was testament to that. And, who can forget the euphoria on defeating their Argentinian counterparts by the same scoreline in the quarters of Rio 2016 Olympic games, especially after they eventually went on to be crowned champions!

In fact, the second of the two set of practice matches which finished day before yesterday was a high goal scoring 4-4 draw against the hosts – Argentina where India is currently on a 16-day tour to resume their FIH Pro League campaign. This comes after the 1st practice match that ended 4-3 in the favour of visitors making it a good start for the Indian senior men’s jockey team as they took the field again to after the postponement of events from March 2020 due to the pandemic.

The Indian team’s campaign started with two practice matches against the Los Leones (The Lions) and will be followed by the FIH Pro League double header, finally concluding with two more matches as part of their Tokyo Olympic 2020 (now 2021) preparations.

All of the matches will be played at the CeNARD sports complex in Buenos Aires.

FIH Standings

India are placed at the fifth position while Olympic champions Argentina have slipped to sixth in the latest FIH Men’s World Ranking standings in what has been a tough year with negligible competitive hockey for every team in the world.

But there are good signs for hockey lovers the world over as events resumed, starting with India’s European friendlies tour in February that was followed by the recommencement of the FIH Pro league season. India is unbeaten so far, following up on their exploits in the European leg. It has played two out of the four practice matches with Argentina as a pre-cursor to the Pro League encounters between these sides. Here’s looking at the highlights of the practice games.

The opening match

In the first fixture, both teams started cautiously in the first quarter taking time to find their feet and make play in the opponent’s circle. It was Indian midfielder Nilakanta Sharma who opened the scoring in the opening minute of the 2nd quarter, courtesy a precise assist from the young forward Shilanand Lakra who started upfront. Thereafter, India were 2-0 up at half-time courtesy a trademark dragflick from Harmanpreet Singh after Dilpreet Singh had earned a penalty corner (PC), with custodian Sreejesh thwarting all counter attempts in our goal.

The Argentinians were quick to respond after the break with Leandro Tolini converting a PC, only for India to restore the two goal cushion with a Rupinder Pal Singh PC goal. But the hosts continued to build the pressure but this time it was Sreejesh’s deputy the young India goalkeeper Krishna Pathak who was alert to stop all the attempts fired at him. However, the Los Leones were eventually rewarded with a Maico Casella goal in the end of the 3rd quarter.

The final quarter remained a close affair with both teams pushing for a win. It was Dilpreet again who setup a PC with his fine play in the second minute, which was duly converted by Varun Kumar who was playing after 18 months having battled multiple injury scares. Tolini added another goal to his tally as the hosts cut the deficit to a solitary goal but the Indian defense was resolute for the remainder of 6 minutes to come out with a well-earned victory. The highlight being that all three dragflickers in Harmanpreet, Rupinder and Varun scored for the visitors.

“It was a very good practice match, intensely fought by both teams. It is always nice to come up with a win against a team like Olympic Champions Argentina as it amplifies our confidence levels. We were able to create opportunities in the circle and also convert them. This was one of the areas we really put our minds to in the national camp back in SAI, Bengaluru. But we allowed Argentina to come back into the first game particularly in the third quarter where they scored twice. When you play a strong team like them, we need to be consistent in all the quarters.” – Chief Coach Graham Reid on the practice matches in the ongoing Argentina tour.

Final practice

The second match was an equally high goal scoring affair. In fact India scored three goals in the opening quarter itself with the hosts also opening their account in between India’s opening two goals. It was Varun who opened the scoring from a PC in the 7th minute that was neatly earned by forward Mandeep Singh. India were pegged back by the fighting Argentines immediately in the 10th minute as Tolini added to his two goal tally from the previous match, being spot on in his PC conversions. Continuing his fine attacking form, Nilakanta turned provider again with an assist that was neatly finished by Rajkumar Pal in the 13th minute. In the next minute, Rupinder turned a PC goal after some good stick work from forward Lalit Upadhyay. Such was the intensity of the first quarter that the break would have somewhat stopped the Indian momentum, much to the relief of the hosts.

The second quarter was equally fast paced with attacks earning multiple PCs for both teams where Argentina forced their way to reduced the margin with a fine goal from Lucas Toscani to make the score 3-2. This was the tone of the entire first half as both teams vied for the ball, trying to dictate terms on the field by playing a very attacking brand of hockey. Post half-time, the game resumed again with both teams being on par with each other in terms of tactics and skills, only for Argentina’s attacking midfielder Ignacio Ortiz to break the gridlock to bring the scores level at 3-3 and thereby bringing the match to an interesting point.

Dilpreet’s foray into the striking circle resulted in another PC just a minute before the end of the 3rd quarter and that was converted by none other than Varun who looks to be in red-hot form! The last quarter was indeed nervy with The Lions upping the ante and pushing the visitors on the backfoot with persistent attacks. India custodian Krishan Pathak made a brilliant save to keep the hosts at bay in the early minutes but it was Lucas’s field goal in the 57th minute that brought an end to this thrilling encounter that ended with a 4-4 stalemate.

Comebacks

It was heartening to see defender Varun Kumar play and get on the scoresheet not just once but thrice over the two matches as the 25-year-old was making a comeback after one and a half years on the sidelines with multiple injury concerns – shoulder, hamstring and having contracted Covid as well. Varun’s last international match was in the Belgian tour way back in October 2019, this after coming up the ranks from the victorious Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup side and becoming one of the mainstays in the central defensive pairing with his consistent performances thereafter.

“It wasn’t easy for me. Being out for a long period would sometimes take a toll on me mentally and my mind would begin to wander. I slowly began to accept that such injuries, and the subsequent layoff periods, are a part and parcel of a player’s life. My coaches and the senior players in the side such as Manpreet Singh, PR Sreejesh and Rupinder Pal Singh guided me a lot. They are big players who have seen many highs and lows in their careers. They told me to work hard on regaining my fitness and giving my 100 percent once the opportunity comes along. Their advice helped me immensely.” Indian Men’s Hockey Team Defender Varun Kumar.

Captain Manpreet Singh and senior dragflicker Rupinder Pal Singh who had opted out of the European tour in February due to personal reasons were the other two members who are also making comebacks on the tour, apart from Varun.

Holistically, the Indian side’s showing in the practice matches augers well for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches against Argentina. Here’s wishing them all the best and hoping for an equally thrilling, entertaining and brilliant performance from the lads.

Recounting the positives from HIL Caravan!

~ Celebrating the mega festival of hockey called HIL, each year in India.

The first time finalists!

The 2017 edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) saw two new finalists in Kalinga Lancers and Dabang Mumbai. Mumbai were table toppers in the group stages. However, the Lancers beat the Dabangs of Mumbai 4–1 in the final to win their first title in the 5th season of the Hockey India League (HIL) in 2017. Punjab Warriors, the defending champions were however eliminated in the round-robin stage. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh (UP) Wizards Team came from behind to defeat the Delhi Waveriders and claim bronze at the Coal India HIL 2017.

HIL

Kalinga Lancers were crowned champions of the 5th season of the Hockey India League (HIL) in 2017.

Appreciated from players, fans and veterans alike!

The overall quality and standard of play in this year’s HIL improved couple of notches from the last season. All the matches were high intensity and the level of competitiveness displayed by all the teams was top class. It was interesting to note that all teams were in fray for the semi-final spots till the last but penultimate day of the group stages. Here’s what Indian hockey legend, the triple gold medal Olympian Mr. Balbir Singh had to say on the grand finale and the HIL tournament in general.

The young guns

It was equally heartening to see local players being groomed into the clubs. A lot of them were fresh and buoyant from the Junior Hockey World Cup triumph and hence warranted a starting place in their squads.

Hon’ble Chief Minister (CM) of the state of Odisha, Mr. Naveen Patnaik felicitated the homegrown Odia players from Season 5 Champions Kalinga Lancers.

Not only did the coaches rely heavily on the fresh homegrown talent, the crowd also cheered for India’s future superstars. They picked up a lot of motivation and enhanced their skills, rubbing shoulders with veterans from across the globe.

“Show me a player of Dipsan’s age who is playing at the top level in the world. There is none.” ~ The German captain Moritz Fuerste on quote.

A rock star in Delhi Waveriders’ solid defensive framework was Indian defender from the senior team Surender Kumar. Surender also played the Rio Olympics and here is his Season 5 campaign in numbers.

Indian senior team defender Surender Kumar’s season in numbers

And such performances at a big stage like HIL don’t go unnoticed these days. Roelant Oltmans, the senior national head coach fast tracked a majority of the young players to the 33 player core probables list.

Foreign connection in India

Each year, the HIL attracts the top talent from across the world where each team bids for marquee players to match their Indian counterparts; albeit this time as club-compatriots!

“We bonded very well. How we stayed as a team is something that I will take home as a fond memory.” ~ The Dabang Mumbai skipper Florian Fuchs on the amazing camaraderie within the camp at the Coal India HIL 2017.

They were bowled over by the hospitality, food, singing and dancing moments with teammates and above all the fan support they received. Here’s a short clip-compilation from some of the outgoing foreign players of Kalinga Lancers on the memories of HIL Season 5 that they will take along home.

Stats, awards and fun facts

It was goals galore at HIL as in the 34 matches played, there were in total 206 goals scored! The tournament’s top-scoring honours were shared by Glenn Turner and Moritz Fürste, both representing Kalinga Lancers’ and having scored 12 goals apiece.

On the other hand, losing finalists and Dabang Mumbai’s captain Florian Fuchs was named the Player of the Tournament. It was double delight for veteran from Germany as he was also awarded with the Hero Achiever Award for Upholding the Spirit of Hockey!

Is there a trophy that Harmanpreet hasn’t won yet? Maturity and calmness personified, Harman bagged the ‘emerging player’ award. Interestingly he was also one of the five nominees for the 2016 FIH’s ‘rising star of the year’ award. The 21-one-year-old drag-flicker was the lynchpin of the Dabang Mumbai setupp scoring seven goals in the tournament.

Harman finishing his trademark drag flick!

“I am happy that my performance in the HIL remained decent and I contributed to my franchise making their maiden final. The enjoyment of the award would have doubled had we lifted the title.” ~ yet another rising Singh and his thoughts immediately after receiving the emerging player award!

Opportunity for some, no comeback for others!

Gurbaj Singh was the highest bid player at the HIL auction having being picked up by Ranch Rays. However, his team failed to qualify for the semis and his was an average performance. The subsequent rise of young players and the accompanying competition meant that the Punjab Police employee could not even feature in the 33 man core probables.

“The selection is not under my control. But what I can do is put my head down and work hard, and give my best in every match I play, be it the HIL, Malaysian League or a national tournament. It has always been my dream to play for my country and give 110 percent every time, and I hope to wear the national colours once again.” ~ Gurbaj on a possible call up in future.

What HIL means to Hockey India and its future

If India has realistic aims to be in the top three and win some major tournaments by the end of this year, the young players need to be given a chance. HIL has always promoted talent from the grassroots and we have seen many a small town players shine and do well.

It was encouraging to see Indian forwards, the likes of Akashdeep Singh of UP Wizards and Dabang Mumbai’s Affan Yousuf also featuring in the top 5 tournament goals scorers. The Indian forward line has been lacking the much needed firepower and goals upfront and the exploits of some of the players in HIL will help us in Azlan Shah and future tournaments of this year.

Moreover, the learnings are mutual as both set of players -Indian and foreign had plenty to give and take in the HIL. Foreign players were eager to pick up the ‘Indian Masala’ tricks whereas the Indians picked up composure in pressure situations and strategies from their counterparts. Let’s watch what they have to say in this video below.

http://www.hotstar.com/sports/hockey/hil-fuels-indian-hockeys-growth/2001901556

The fact that India would not be sending their junior team in the Sultan Johor Cup in Malaysia for the second year running has made it mandatory to also include the freshers to give them much needed game time and experience. The HIL has become the breeding ground for fresh talent and the fans are eager to see our stars in action soon!
